Enrollments, Schedules, and More

The first month of our new school year has passed and so we have some exciting news to share with you. We now have 91 children enrolled in the school, 70 of which are indigent. The remaining 21 students also come from lower-income families, however, they are able to pay a small tuition and purchase their own books and uniforms.

We have been able to open four grades this year: Kindergarten and Grades 1-3. Kindergarten and Grade 2 runs different sessions in the morning and in the afternoon in order to accommodate the larger number of children in those grades. Grades 1 and 3 are able to have their classes all day long. If you would like to see the class schedules in detail, please follow this link.

The staff gathers together every morning for 15 minutes before the classes start to pray and sing together and dedicate the children and daily activities into God’s hands. Our new principal and two new teachers perfectly fit the school culture and are a great asset to the team. We are hoping to be able to introduce them to you one by one in the weeks to come.

The first Sunday’s fellowship meeting after the school resumed had been very well attended. 80% of the sponsored families participated and had a blessed time of sharing the Word of God and testifying of God’s goodness towards them.

And the children? They are very lively as usual. It is good for them to spend their time in an environment that is conducive to righteousness. It is our prayer that this year would be a year for many of them to come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ as well as making Him the King of their lives. We very much appreciate your prayers on their behalf.

The New School Year Has Started!

We are very happy to let you all know that we have started a new school year this week, Monday, June 10. It is very good to see the little smiling faces again and be able to impart God’s life and knowledge to their souls. Once the initial business settles down a bit, we will be able to give you more detailed news about our enrollments, new teachers, principal, and other things. For right now, we trust you will enjoy seeing a few pictures from the first day in school and the newly remodeled premises. You may notice that the new teacher’s uniforms perfectly match the color of the newly painted building. 🙂 You may also remember the parents’ comments from last year, “The teachers of this school are beautiful, but their desks are not.” 🙂 Well, the desks look much better this year. A big THANK YOU to all of you who made the start of this new school year a success.

Summer Classes 2013

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the summer break! Our summer classes have been going very well. The lessons are focused mainly on reading and writing. Parents whose children are participating in these classes are so happy to have their little once in the school learning to read and write rather than just playing and roaming around all day long. We are so privileged to be making a difference in these little lives. Thank you all for your prayers and support.

[Please note that the brown desks in the pictures below are the newly painted ones. The rest of the furniture is still waiting for its new coat.]

Our School and Your Involvement

A number of you have been asking if there is anything you and your fellowship can do for the school in the Philippines apart from sponsoring a particular child. There is so much that you can be involved in! First of all, please pray that all those who participate in the operation of the school would have the wisdom that is needed to accomplish the responsibility God has given – to teach the children to love God and walk with Him in all aspects of life. Secondly, if you would like to take part in some of the “material” needs, following is a list of extra costs that the summer months (April & May) and the beginning of the new school year (June) are bringing:

  1. New classroom for the 3rd grade (materials & labor): $750
  2. Desks for the 3rd grade & new ceiling fans: $400
  3. Paint & painting materials: $650
  4. 2 new computers (there is currently only one PC that all the school staff is sharing): $600
  5. Staff uniforms: $650
  6. Uniforms for children without a sponsor (about 25): $250
  7. Books for children without a sponsor: $1,250

If you would like to donate toward these specific needs, you can do so either by mailing a check to Sonlight Ministries Missionary Fund, PO Box 1128, Mahomet, IL 61853 or paying electronically by using our secure payment system. Please designate your contribution to “PH School” and one of the projects/items from the list above. Also, if you would like to see some of the work-in-progress for yourselves, you are welcome to visit our our posts School Building Reconstruction and Summer in the School which show our latest pictures.

It is difficult to put into words what our little involvement is doing in the lives of those who are receiving it. Numerous lives have been brought from darkness to light and it is just the beginning. We are very much looking forward to seeing the generation of these little children transforming the environment in which they live by the power of the living God.

Thank you for your generosity and for sharing your kindness with the indigent of the Philippines. May the Lord bless you mightily.

Summer in the School

As the summer in the Philippines is proceeding, we have more news to share with you. We are now starting the summer classes with 30 students, most of whom are the sponsored children. 17 of the kindergartners who will enter the first grade this coming June are attending the morning session. 13 of the grade 1 and 2 pupils, who need to improve their reading skills, participate in the afternoon session.

And how is our building reconstruction going? See for yourselves.

School Building Reconstruction

One may think that when the children leave the school premises to enjoy their summer holidays (April and May for us), the staff can put their feet up and enjoy their own vacation. Well, not so really. The administrative staff here turns into a productive shopping crew; the school counselor calls his friends and they cut, hammer and paint all that is around them. The school building hasn’t received much upgrade since the beginning of its existence and it has become obvious that we cannot survive another year with the peeling-off paint and squeaky fans. In addition to this, the current premises cannot get certified for teaching the third grade without putting up another room of a decent size. (It’s hard to believe that we will already have third-graders!)

The building we are renting for the school is a former hospital. The rooms do not match the standard school sizes which are so common in the Philippines and which can hold up to 60 students. However, they are good enough to use. Our landlord is gracious enough to let us tear down and re-build whatever we please and so we are taking advantage of it. The open space on the upper floor that used to serve as a library is being closed in and a new classroom will be available for the new school year. Also, the inside walls are getting a new coat – see for yourselves. And so, everybody is in a hurry to finish the job as the mandatory summer kindergarten classes will start soon and the children’s voices will again fill the hallways.

We just want to thank you all for your generous support. If it were not for God’s mercies shown to us through you, this work would never be able to continue. Thank you so much again.

The Harvest Truly Is Great

by Pavlina Davis

After working with the Kingdom Message Ministry School in the Philippines for almost three years, my husband and I were given the opportunity to go, see, and touch that which we have been involved in from the comfort of our home office. To say that we were excited upon hearing the news of our traveling would be an understatement. It is hard to put into words the burden that God places upon one’s heart with regard to the nations and their need for the Gospel of the Kingdom. We have seen many personal sacrifices that some have done in this aspect; we have also poured many prayers and intercessions on behalf of the people in the countries that have been opened up to the Word of God. So for my husband and me to be able to go personally to the Philippines has proved to be God enlarging our hearts for His people and His work.

One thing that was so very apparent to me in the Philippines was God’s desire for His people in general. You encounter people of different color and different mentality, yet God’s plan is still the same – to have His sons who are conformed into His likeness. And so it was that most of what God did in the midst of the congregation was His cleansing by the Blood of Jesus. We were able to witness some 20-30 souls finding Jesus as their Savior at the first conference in Butuan City, Mindanao Island. The second conference, held in a small town located about an hour from Butuan City, brought much deliverance to about 20 young people plus a few older ones who rededicated their lives to the Lord with a fresh knowledge of what type of righteousness is required of those who serve God. It was a great blessing to witness the move of God upon these lives.

A major part of our stay in the Philippines was spent in the Kingdom Message Ministry School. There had been some changes implemented into the general operation during the past year and our desire was to better understand the school’s establishment, its operations and efficiency of the processes. Since June 2012 the school has been fully financially supported by the brethren and friends from the United States, Europe, and Africa. And so, part of our investigation was also aimed at fulfilling the legal requirements of the respective countries (mainly the United States) to perform organizational and financial audits. We have looked into the governance of the school, operational management, organizational structure, performance and financial management, administrative systems, risk management, curriculum, etc. We have been very pleased to find much documentation and processes in place in such a way that it would pass the test in any developed country. Those items that didn’t match the standards of best practices will be implemented step by step in the next few months (e.g. regular fire drills).

It was said by external (ministry of education) and internal (staff) personnel that KMMS is one of the better schools in the area. The staff has a great desire to work together in order to impart Godly principles into the children and teach them how to love God. The teachers appreciate the liberty not only to be able to teach the children good manners and principles as other Christian schools do, but also to teach the Bible as a subject and its application to one’s life.

Most of the children in the school come from the very poorest of the poor. In order for them to qualify for sponsorship, they have to submit a government document that is given only to the indigent population. In addition to this, only a simple look at the children and their parents/guardians and the visible lack of nutrition shows their desperate need. One wishes there was more we could do for them (e.g. provide more feeding programs, vitamins, etc.), but we rejoice in what God has given to us at this time. It is such a blessing to hear the 4-year olds recite the whole passages of the Bible, or to see the teacher using fractions during math class to teach the little ones about God sharing His Son with us and how we can share with others.

One of our team members, Brother Chijioke Nwauche who travels to many African countries to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom, stated that the classrooms were very well equipped with teaching materials (posters, etc.) in comparison to most African schools. Upon further investigation we learned that all these materials were the teachers’ private property as the school didn’t have enough finances to provide for these. We truly appreciate the teachers’ personal sacrifice!

Shortly before we embarked on our trip back to our base in the U.S., we were able to meet a lady who will assume the position of a principal (part-time) in June 2013. The ministry of education had tolerated us not having a principle for these three years, but this time had come to an end. The new principal is a born-again believer dedicated to the work of God. She has 30+ years of experience in education (first as a teacher, then as a principal, and finally, as a superintendent). We all (but the teachers the most!) are very much looking forward to having her on board.

One of the major difficulties the school is facing at the moment is its premises. As the number of students grows, so does the need for more space. Also, the teachers are asking, “Please, can we do something with the classrooms (better ventilation, space, lighting, etc.) so that the children can think better?” Even though we will be working on a few building updates during the summer months (April, May), we know we will not be able to remain in the same rented building for much longer. Our desire is to have our own school premises with lots of space not only in the classrooms so that the teachers could actually walk in between the students’ desks, but also outside so that the children would have a place to play and exercise. Please pray with us with regard to this need as we know God will provide for that which is in His heart.

Overall, the visit to the school has proved to be very profitable. There is a great willingness of all parties to co-operate and bring the school to the next level. It is a real pleasure to see the life of God being imparted into the Filipino next generation, especially those in great need.

What else is there to say? Thank you all so very much for all your prayers that have not only kept us but also gave us strength to accomplish that which we were sent to do. Let us continue to consider Luke 10:2 and pray in its direction, “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” May the Lord richly bless you.

In His service,
Pavlina Davis

Third Foundation Day

Another Foundation Day of our school for the indigent children was held in January – the third one already! Every school in the Philippines assigns one day each year for a special event for the children and their families. The children put up a small performance and there is also a meal provided for all those present. Enjoy a few pictures from our time of fellowship.

The Last “Thank You” in 2012

“Thank you” from a grateful mother:

Kingdom Message Ministry is really God’s gift to us because my daughter, Krishelle, is given the opportunity to study and learn. She is in the kindergarten and is having great time learning and actively participating in class activities – especially when praying and being taught how precious the Word of God is.

We thank our sponsors for their unceasing support. We greatly appreciate your offered assistance to Krishelle. May you always have good health and peace in your hearts. May you continue to be stewards of good purpose to the poor and needy.

Thank you,
Margie P.

“Thank you” from a grateful 1st Grader:

When I grow up, I want to be a policeman. I will study hard and with the guidance of our Almighty God I can do this. I will finish my studies to help my parents and ease our way of living.

I would like to thank my sponsors for sponsoring my studies and to the teachers for teaching me. Thank you also, our brothers and sisters, for sharing God’s message. I will also carry these values when I grow up.

Carl Zedrick S.
(Carl is an honor student in Grade 1)
